Monika Fürnsinn
About Me
Monika is a PhD student in the Acoustofluidics group at Lund University - LTH in collaboration with Heidelberg University (IMSEAM). Her research focuses on the development of a microfluidic acoustochromatography platform for biomedical applications, with a particular focus on trapping and enrichment of extracellular vesicles (EVs). She is especially interested in how interdisciplinary engineering approaches can be used to improve the workflow and enhance the diagnostic potential of the system.
She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biotechnology at University of Applied Life Sciences Campus Wien in 2023 before continuing with a Master’s degree in Biotechnology from Lund University – LTH, which she completed in 2025. Her first thesis research experience involved recombinant production of allergens and the evaluation of IgE interactions using patient-derived sera. During her master’s studies, she joined a collaborative project with University of Copenhagen under the supervision of Jörg P. Kutter, where she designed and investigated a microscale lectin-affinity chromatography platform for glycoprotein separation and detection.
Her doctoral research now focuses on further developing acoustochromatography systems for the isolation and enrichment of EVs. The project involves the optimisation of separation performance, and the integration of selective capture strategies for EV subpopulations. By involving computational assistance with Python for data analysis and system automatisation, she works towards a robust and scalable platform for EV biomarker analysis and future diagnostic applications.
In a broader context, Monika’s interests span acoustofluidics, lab-on-a-chip systems, biomedical engineering, and biotechnology. She is motivated by the possibility to evolve the acoustochromatography platform into a practical biomedical tool and enjoys working across disciplines to address complex diagnostic and engineering challenges.
